2020 Resolutions

by Kat Petrick

Twenty-nineteen was not my year for healthy living. So, I have A LOT of resolutions this year. Instead of getting overwhelmed, I'm taking smaller steps towards my best-self. I used this cute Tumbalina Magnetic Calendar (available on tumbalina.com) to help visualize my goals and break them down into manageable months. Now, when I see the calendar on my refrigerator, I'm reminded of what I'm working toward each month.

JAN: No Alcohol

This month's goal may be cliché, as many people participate in Dry January. However, I'm all for taking a break from alcohol.

FEB: Run One Mile Each Day

I was an athlete in high school, but ever since it's been a struggle committing to a daily workout. One mile a day is a doable and realistic challenge for me.

MAR: No Meat

I love animals and am trying to do my part for the environment. I've wanted to try to be a vegetarian forever; only, it's tough because everyone in my family eats meat. I've convinced a family member to join me, to make going meatless a tiny bit easier.

APR: Walk 20 Minutes During My Lunch Break

I get an hour for lunch on workdays; I would like to get my blood pumping in an attempt to counteract the sitting I do at work.

MAY: Meditate to Start Each Day

I intend to start each morning with five minutes of meditation and add one more minute every day. I am planning on using an app I've downloaded before called Headspace.

JUN: Volunteer on Weekends

I'd love to give back to the community more. Therefore in June, I'm going to volunteer my time to help a local organization. Now I have to pick one!

JUL: Limit TV Watching to 30 Minutes a Day

As a millennial, Netflix is on no matter what I'm doing: cooking, doing dishes, and even spending time with family. This is going to be a trying month, but I'm excited to attempt this challenge.

AUG: Drink 2 Liters of Water Every Day

The benefits of drinking water are numerous, but the importance of staying hydrated tends to slip through the cracks. In August, I plan to pay more attention to my water intake.

SEP: No Excess Spending

I choose to limit, if not completely avoid, spending money on nonessential items. After taking a step back, I realize I can do without a majority of my Amazon and Target purchases. Those purchases are money and time I could be spending on something more meaningful.

OCT: One Kind Act Each Day

In the month of kindness, I aim to look daily for moments where I can improve someone else's day. It's said, "The best things come in small packages." The same is true when doing something thoughtful for another person. It doesn't have to be something huge.

NOV: No Eating Out (unless invited by someone else)

In other words, I plan on putting an end to ordering lunch. I will take 5 minutes each night to pack my lunch for the next day. This resolution is about being more proactive in my life and intentional about saving money.

DEC: 10 Minutes of Journaling

My last 2020 resolution will reflect on the changes and growth during the year. I created a jar to help me remember happy memories throughout the year. Journaling will be different because I will use this to think about what worked and didn't work for this year.

It's never too late to get started on your steps to becoming a better person. How do you make changes in your life? Do you have any resolutions this year?
